The doors of the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa reopened on 15 October 2026, four months after the first crews moved in. But the hardest engineering on this job was done not in the suites or the kitchens. It took place in the water in front of the property, where a coastal protection scheme now holds a shoreline that had been steadily giving way.
That stretch of the island’s northwest coast has been under pressure for decades. Regional coral mortality, estimated at between 50 and 60 percent after bleaching episodes linked to climate disruption, has accelerated erosion of the littoral. In front of the hotel itself, the shoreline retreated by 40 metres between 1967 and 2012. To counter the trend, Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels brought in the Breton firm Espace Pur and its patented STABIPLAGE system. Numerical modelling of the site came first. Then six T-shaped geotextile structures were submerged offshore to break the energy of the swell and neutralise lateral currents, paired with a recharge of 13,500 cubic metres of sand. The result is a soft, scalable and reversible installation, one designed to work with the beach’s natural dynamics rather than against them. The group presents this delivery choice as its template for how a resort protects its natural capital.
Meanwhile, on land, the reopening marks a double milestone for the property, a fixture of the Mauritian coast set across 35 hectares of tropical gardens: 55 years of operation, and the completion of a renovation that touched nearly every guest-facing surface. The redesign, entrusted to the Mauritian practice JFA Architects, leans into a “vintage chic” aesthetic while keeping the site’s original character intact. The Beachfront, Junior and Senior Suites and the Garden Suites were entirely refitted, with tropical-patterned fabrics, colourful artworks and wide terraces opening onto the vegetation.
The food and beverage offer was rebuilt as well. The flagship restaurant L’Oasis can now seat 450 guests, 100 of them outdoors, in a decor of rope, rattan and coloured ceramics. A first for the brand, the Corner Café serves specialty coffees, crêpes and early breakfast. The Beachcomber boutique has been restyled in an eclectic chic spirit that echoes the hotel’s new reception area.
Execution of the programme coincided with a change at the top. Kervyn Rayeroux has taken over as General Manager, succeeding Théo Fleurié. His appointment crowns a career of more than thirty-two years within the group: he joined in 1993 as a Guest Relations Officer at the Shandrani Beachcomber before moving on to lead food and beverage services and then general management. Under the new management, and to mark the anniversary, the hotel is offering this autumn a guaranteed early check-in and late check-out for all Beachfront Senior Pool Suites on any stay of at least seven nights.
For the operators, the works are also a statement about where tropical luxury hospitality is heading. The appeal of a beach destination, the argument runs, is no longer measured only by gastronomy or architecture but by an operator’s capacity to protect the natural assets it depends on. For hoteliers across the Indian Ocean, the challenge ahead will be to generalise these soft, reversible engineering solutions and to turn the safeguarding of ecosystems into a genuine selling point for travellers.
On the evidence of this reopening, the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has made that case with concrete, sand and fabric in the water, alongside the more visible refurbishment on land. Whether the submerged barrier holds the line over the coming years will be the true test of the delivery.
