Editorial Standards

Independent journalism illuminating Mauritius' civic landscape

Mauritius Civic Lens is committed to serving our readers with accurate, fair, and transparent journalism that advances informed civic participation. These editorial standards guide our work and reflect our accountability to our audience. Accuracy and Verification: We verify all factual claims through multiple reliable sources before publication. Our reporters are required to confirm information directly with primary sources whenever possible. We distinguish clearly between facts, analysis, and opinion. When information cannot be independently verified, we state this explicitly. We avoid speculation presented as fact and acknowledge uncertainty when it exists. Numerical claims, statistics, and quotes are verified for accuracy and proper context. Sourcing and Attribution: We attribute information to named sources whenever possible, as transparency about our sources strengthens credibility. When sources request anonymity, we grant it only when the information is significant, cannot be obtained otherwise, and the source's motivation is clear to readers. We explain why anonymity was granted. We do not use anonymous sources for personal attacks or unverifiable claims. Our reporters maintain detailed source documentation for editorial review and fact-checking purposes. Independence and Conflicts of Interest: Mauritius Civic Lens maintains independence from political parties, commercial interests, and other entities that could compromise our editorial judgment. Staff members disclose potential conflicts of interest to editors before covering relevant stories. We do not accept gifts or favors from news sources. Our ownership structure and funding sources are transparent to readers. We clearly separate news reporting from opinion content and advertising. We do not allow advertisers or commercial partners to influence story selection or editorial treatment. Corrections and Accountability: We acknowledge and correct errors promptly and transparently. Corrections are published alongside original content with clear explanations of what was changed. We maintain a public corrections log. Readers can contact our Corrections Desk at [email protected]. We take responsibility for errors in our reporting process and use them as learning opportunities to improve our standards. AI Use and Disclosure: We use artificial intelligence tools to assist with research, data analysis, and content organization, but human journalists make all editorial decisions. When AI has significantly contributed to reporting, we disclose this to readers. We do not publish AI-generated news content without human verification and reporting. We maintain human accountability for all published material. Reader Trust: Our ultimate responsibility is to our readers. We prioritize clarity, fairness, and usefulness in our reporting. We engage with reader feedback and criticism seriously. We explain our editorial decisions when questioned. We recognize that trust is earned through consistent adherence to these standards and is easily lost through shortcuts or compromises. We are committed to serving the civic health of Mauritius through journalism that respects both accuracy and our readers' intelligence.
